Since 1989 the Lighting Design Lab has been meeting their goals through education & training, consultations, technical assistance, and demonstrations.

Available on their website are Commercial Lighting Guides. These guides were created to be general templates for energy efficient designs for various types of commercial building spaces. They are based on the Advanced Energy Design Guide (AEDG) series published by American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) to assist people in going beyond the energy requirements of Standard 90.1-1999.

Consultations are available for commercial, industrial and daylighting projects. "Lighting consultations take many forms, and provide you with 2 or 3 energy efficient design options, based on information you provide us."

Getting a consultation provides you with choices – "information on how to reduce your lighting-related energy consumption while maintaining or improving your lighting quality. You will receive alternative lighting solutions (whenever possible) for each area being considered. Switching and control information will also be discussed for additional energy savings."
