Ivy Out, Public Service in

Friends of Sunset Park extend their reach another 4 acres toward Boeing Creek

A perfect day and a perfect way to earn public service hours for Shorewood scholars William Hubbell and John Allen. The 15-year-old boys joined veteran volunteer Al Wagar, a 26-year resident of Innis Arden, to start on phase two of the great Sunset Park cleanup.

Saturday’s plan included removing ivy in the 4 acre area southeast of Sunset, an area that connects Sunset to Boeing Creek. Eventually, the city would like to create a connecting trail and a view area that would be ADA accessible toward the bottom near 175th Street.

Al noted the ivy has already killed several wonderful native Douglas Firs. He’d like to get to the ivy before it does more damage.

The October 8 turnout was a little slim. Al said he
could really use help at the next work party scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 22
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m..
