Shorewood's Mitsui Joins Snell as Rays Draftee

Shorewood baseball player Trevor Mitsui has been drafted in the 12th-round by the Tampa Bay Rays.

The day after watching teammate Blake Snell be selected by the Tampa Bay Rays as the 52nd overall pick in the 2011 Major League Baseball first-year player draft, Shorewood's Trevor Mitsui heard his name called by the same organization.

Tampa Bay selected Mitsui in the 12th round of the MLB draft, making the senior the 390th player selected overall.

Mitsui, who has committed to play for the University of Washington, was named the Gatorade Washington State Player of the Year following a senior season in which he put together some of the best numbers in recent memory in the state of Washington.

Mitsui hit .712 with a mind-boggling on-base percentage of .845, while hitting 13 homeruns and striking out just once in 97 plate appearances. Shorewood head coach Wyatt Tonkin, who has coached for over 25 years, called Mitsui the best high school hitter he's ever seen,

“He’s the best high school hitter I’ve ever seen," Tonkin said following Shorewood's advancement to the 3A state title game. "Period.”
