Shorecrest Claims Rotary Cup for Eighth Consecutive Year

The Scots defeat the Thunderbirds 42-21 at Shoreline Stadium Friday in a rivalry football game.

Junior Keegan Lockler scored three touchdowns including 97-yard  kickoff return for a score to lead Shorecrest to an eighth consecutive Rotary Cup win, 42-21, over rival Shorewood, Friday night at Shoreline Stadium.

“This is something you remember for the rest of your life,” Lockler said.

Lockler credited his blockers who created the wedge for him to run through on the kickoff return and the line for his two other touchdowns, a 19-yard reception and an 11-yard run.

Shorecrest never trailed in the game despite having to overcome several comebacks by Shorewood and 95 yards in penalties.

The Scots struck first on a 19-yard pass from quarterback Ted Hammond to Lockler in the first quarter. They went up 14-0 on a 1-yard run by Hammond early in the second quarter.

Shorewood answered with a 73-yard pass play from quarterback Aaron Miller to Chris Namba. Namba caught the ball at the Shorewood 35 and broke free outrunning several Scots en route to the longest play from scrimmage on the night.

Shorecrest answered with a 20-yard run by Troy Philips, a running back who plays for the Scots but attends University Prep.

Shorewood punted on their next possession but retained the ball after two personal foul penalties in a row on Shorecrest. The T-birds drove down to the Shorecrest 1-yard line and running back Eugene Holley piled into the end zone for his only touchdown on what was a quiet night for him (18 carries, 33 yards).

With momentum starting to shift back to Shorewood, the Scots quickly took it back as Lockler busted loose down the left sideline for his first kickoff return for a touchdown before the half.

Shorewood still wasn’t done though.

On their first possession of the third quarter, the T-birds showed their big pass play ability again when Gage Carroll hauled in a 55-yard pass from Miller, beating the Scots defense.

Shorecrest answered again as Lockler capped a 67-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown run with 5:32 to play in the third quarter.

Keegan Small tagged on a 7-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Shorecrest ran the ball 48 times for 213 yards. Small led the way with nine carries for 88 yards while Lockler carried 17 times for 52 yards.

“We came in with the mentality we had to control the ball up front and we were able to do that,” Shorecrest coach Brandon Christensen said.

Hammond finished the night 10-of-19 passing for 139 yards and no interceptions. John Odion led Shorecrest receivers with six catches for 74 yards.

Miller completed 12-of-26 passes for 254 yards and two scores but threw three interceptions that ended T-bird drives, including two to Shorecrest free safety Aaron Kelly and one to cornerback Gabe Ortega.

Shorecrest (2-2 Wesco 3A League) hosts Everett, which lost to Oak Harbor, 47-14 Friday, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30.

Shorewood (1-3 Wesco 3A League) travels to Marysville-Getchell to play at 7 p.m. next Friday.
