The Prep Postseason: The Week Ahead

District basketball playoffs start this week, wrestling, swimming and gymnastics finals are Saturday

Playoffs? Yes, playoffs. Players and fans of high school sports teams in Shoreline are ready for the frenzy of February.

The student-athletes, their friends and classmates, parents, grandparents and whoever else might be along for the ride have been gearing up all year for this moment. These days almost everyone makes the postseason and all the Shoreline schools are represented. You never know what might happen.

Some teams are on the road this week, but many are staying home or close to home, saving on travel costs.

So without further ado, here's the lineup for this week for boys and girls basketball, boys swimming wrestling and gymnastics.

Girls Basketball:

1. Shorewood (WesCo 6 seed) at Shorecrest (1 seed) Wednesday, Feb. 9, 7:30 p.m. (first round 3A District 1 tournament) Shorecrest, the champions of the Wesco 3A for the first time under first-year coach Dori Monson, swept this series between crosstown rivals but only won by two points last time. Shorecrest is the favorite at home, but it's not always easy when your opponent knows you well to beat them three times in a season. Winner hosts a winner-to-state game Friday, Feb. 11 at home.

2. Friday Harbor at King's, Wednesday, Feb. 9, 4:30 p.m. King's girls hoops is back under coach Dan Taylor, after a few down years that followed 15 years of dominance during which the Knights never missed the state tournament. Archbishop Murphy took over the Cascade Conference top spot several years ago from the Knights and had 58 straight league games until King's shocked the Wildcats in triple overtime last month. The Knights are playing for a spot in the Tri-District tournament Saturday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. at home.

Boys Basketball:
1. Shorecrest (WesCo 4 seed) at Mount Vernon (NWC 1 seed) on Thursday Feb. 10, 7:30 p.m. (first round 3A District 1 tournament). The Scots under coach Brian Fischer go on the road to play an always tough Mount Vernon team in their home gym, the mystique-filled "crown jewel" of high school basketball gyms in the state, according to Seattle Times sports scribe Craig Smith. The band will have crowd amped up and often the crowd breaks out in a mid-1980s JJ Fad rap from the mid-80s at halftime. The streaky Scots could pull the upset if they happen to be  playing their 'A' game. Winner hosts either Shorewood or Mountlake Terrace on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m.

2. Shorewood (5 seed) at Mountlake Terrace (2 seed) on Thursday Feb. 10, 7:30 p.m. The T-birds are on the road and are an underdog but this young team has talent. Coached by long-time coach Marv Morris and led by post Josh Hawkinson the T-birds may be a year a way from really making some noise but they could surprise.

3. King's vs. Nooksack Valley at Mount Vernon H.S. Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 7:45 p.m. The Knights under coach Bill Liley were young this year but they don't want to let that stop them from making a sixth straight state appearance. Both teams will move on regardless of the result. If the Knights win they host a Tri-District game on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. If they lose they host a game Saturday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m.

4. The Shoreline Christian boys host a playoff game Saturday, Feb. 12, time TBA. The winner will play Tuesday, Feb. 15 at Chief Leschi.

Boys Swim and Dive:
Shorecrest and Shorewood will compete in the District 1 swim and dive championships Friday, Feb. 11 and Saturday, Feb. 12 at Anacortes. The preliminaries on Friday start at 4:30 p.m. The finals on Saturday start at 6:30 p.m. Shorewood is back in Class 3A after winning the state 4A team state title last year. Both teams top swimmers have already logged state qualifying times.

Wrestling: The top five in each weight class in the subregional tournament advanced to the Regional Tournament that starts at 10 a.m. Feb. 12 at Glacier Peak High School. Shorewood advanced eight wrestlers led by 119-pound subregional champion, senior Brandon Leach. Shorecrest advanced four wrestlers led by 189-pound subregional champion senior Alejandro Loeza and 285-pound subregional champion, junior Ian Bolstad. The top four from each weight class advance to state Feb. 18-19 at the Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome.

Gymnastics:
Shorecrest and Shorewood at District meet, Saturday, Feb. 12 at Sammamish High School.
