Stenfjord, Hopen Finish Shorewood Careers at State Championships

The Shorewood Thunderbirds finished in second place in the team scoring the 3A state championships with Mackey Hopen adding another state title to his mantle

Mackey Hopen, Thor Stenfjord and the Shorewood Thunderbirds swim and dive team had an outstanding day at the 3A state swim and dive championships, finishing in third-place in the team scoring behind Mercer Island and Lakeside.

Hopen ended his career with another individual state championship with a time of 21.0 seconds in the 50 free.

"Mackey and Thor are going to go down in the history of Shorewood as the best duo I think, ever," said Shorewood coach Scott Kelley.

"I'm going to miss them a lot next year."

Kelley also brought several underclassmen to KCAC as alternates in order to show them the bright lights and big stage of the state competition, saying he believes the T-Birds will again have a strong group in the pool next season.

Even with the incredible amount of individual success Hopen has had, he said his lasting memory from his time swimming at Shorewood will be the winning relay teams he was able to swim on.

"Those [the relays] are what's the most fun for me, that's what I'm going to miss the most," said Hopen after his final swim as a T-Bird.

The senior was joined by Stenfjord, Colin Bell and Andrew Garrison in the 200 medley relay, where they finished second with a mark of 1:38.72.

That foursome added another second place finish in the 200 free relay as well and Hopen added a second place finish in the final event of his Shorewood career, the 100 breaststroke.

Stenfjord finished second in the marathon 500 free with a time of 4:35.39, which was good enough to earn the senior All-American consideration.

Junior diver Eddie Young entered the day trailing the defending 3A state champion, Troy Neklason of Highline, by just under five points with three dives remaining.

Young nailed all three of his championship dives on Saturday and finished the meet with the 3A state diving title after winning the diving competition in 4A last season.

He talked after the meet about tuning out all of the distractions during his final dive and using "tunnel vision" to execute at a high level.

Shorecrest was represented at the 3A championships by the 200 medley relay team of Carter Osborne, Michael Johnson, Todd Matsunami and Axel Wickstrom.

The Scots finished in eighth with a time of 1:47.98 in the B-Final.

Senior diver Reyes McElmurry earned a total score of 279.90, which was good for an eleventh place finish.

Osborne also swam a mark of 50.39 in the 100 free during the preliminary round and missed out on a slot at the B-Final in the 100 backstroke by two one-hundreths of a second.

Senior Ryan McMahon swam a 5:11.83 in the 500 free for the Scots.

Ramsey, Russell Groves, Michael Doquio and Wickstrom finished with a time of 1:35.32 in the prelims of the 200 free relay.

The Kamiak Knights, who were the only team to defeat the T-Birds during the regular season, won the 4A championship by 70 points over second place finisher Todd Beamer.

Sehome took the 2A title with Interlake (Bellevue) finishing second and Pullman High School in third.
