Shoreline School District Musicians Honored

More concerts slated for this month

February has already been a big month for Shoreline School District musicians and more is on the way.

The Shorecrest Jazz Band directed by Vince Caruso competed in the annual Viking Jazz Festival hosted by North Kitsap High School on Feb. 4. Based on their scores from the afternoon performance, the band earned a chance to perform in the evening concert and earned second place in the 3A/4A division. Based upon their overall performance during the daytime prelims and the evening finals, the panel of judges also awarded the band with the sweepstakes trophy as the outstanding band of the festival.

 On Feb. 5, a number of Shorecrest band/orchestra students participated in the Sno-King Regional Solo and Ensemble Festival on Feb. 5. Several have earned a chance to move on to the state contest in April at Central Washington University:

Shoreline School District student musicians were recently selected to the All-State and All-Northwest music honor groups. They will perform during the joint MENC-Northwest/WMEA (Washington State Music Educators Association) convention Feb. 17 to 20 in Bellevue and Seattle.

 Shorecrest High School: All-Northwest Honor Band: David Miller, percussion; Christopher Hughes, clarinet; Declan Sullivan, percussion. All-Northwest Symphony Orchestra: Amy Glaskova, viola. All-State symphony orchestra: Spencer Feathers, trombone.

 Shorewood High School: All-Northwest Mixed Choir: Oscar de Langen, bass; Ryan Gunn, bass. All-Northwest Treble Choir: Jeanie Marinella, soprano; Helen Stimson, soprano. All-State Symphony Orchestra: Mackenzie Bang, violin, Evan Strandberg, trombone; Jacob Ziontz, viola. All-State Symphonic Choir: Amy Lind, alto; Cassie Willock, soprano.

 Einstein Middle School: Junior All-State Orchestra and Band: Tamyra Clark-Hoogstrate, viola; Gwen Miller, clarinet; Nick Nagy, viola; Joshua Paik, cello; Shane Peterson, clarinet; Susan Saewong, alto saxophone.

 Also, the Kellogg Middle School Wind Ensemble, directed by Alec Wilmart, has been chosen to perform at the MENC-Northwest Division Music Educators Conference on Feb. 19 in Bellevue. Over 110 performance groups from the primary level to the collegiate level auditioned to perform at this prestigious event. Only 35 music groups were chosen, and of those, only a select number of concert bands received invitations to perform.

Tonight is the District Orchestra Festival, at 7:30 p.m. at the Spartan Gym while the Westside Band Festival, is 7:30 p.m. Feb. 17 in the Shorewood Gym.
