Husband and Wife Teaching Team at King's Selected as Teachers of the Year

Couple receive honor from Washington Federation of Independent Schools

The Washington Federation of Independent Schools has selected King’s teachers, Juanita and Mikel Thompson as its 2012 Teachers of the Year.

The WFIS Board of Directors presents its Best of Washington Awards annually to exemplary private school candidates from around the state in up to seven categories. The Thompsons’ commitment to excellent education is evidenced in their service to King's, the pre K-12 private Christian school in Shoreline. This prestigious award was presented at the annual Winter Dinner on February 9, 2012.

The Thompsons are instrumental in the academic success and advancement of King’s Schools. Together they are heads of the Robotics teams at both the Elementary and High School. Mikel began the Robotics program in 2009 when he formed the first King’s High School Robotics Team. In their inaugural season King’s won the NW Regional Robotics Championship, qualified for the World Competition, and placed in the top 20 in the world.

The Thompsons strongly believe in uniting technology innovation and the Christian faith.

“Our passion is to grow King’s Schools Robotics Program where students utilize STEM (Science/Technology/ Engineering/Mathematics) to research innovative solutions to real world problems while developing a compassionate heart for God and people so that they can positively impact the world.”

In 2011, Juanita joined Mikel in using robotics to enhance student learning when she began the K-6 portion of the program. Over the past three years, the King’s robotics team has grown to include over 80 students. In the current season, the King’s Robotics teams are performing stronger than ever with a first place finish in nearly every competition entered.

With a willingness to go above and beyond in motivating and inspiring students in areas of science and technology, the couple has brought King's Schools to the cutting edge in nationwide STEM education. King’s celebrates this award and is thankful for all that Mikel and Juanita do to inspire hearts and equip minds at King’s Schools.
