Viewfinder: Shoreline Residents Take Advantage of Recycle Fest

Event gives residents a chance to get rid of hard to recycle materials

For the past 10 years, Recycle Fest organized by the city of Shoreline for Shoreline residents has given them the chance to rid their property of things like broken concrete, scrap metal, roofing shingles, bicycles and more.

Two events occur each year, one in the spring and one in the fall—the fall event took place Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Shoreline Park & Ride at 192nd St. and Aurora Ave. N.

The events are partially grant-funded, said Rika Cecil, Shoreline's environmental programs coordinator.  King County Solid Waste, the state Department of Ecology and regional hazardous waste management programs all kick in money to make it possible.

Residents drive up and provide identification before moving the through the maze of dumpsters to drop off their items.

Cleanscapes, which provides garbage and recycling service to Shoreline, takes away much of the material. The company takes it to a recycling center in Renton.

Other junk is taken elsewhere by other service providers. For example, concrete goes to Renton Concrete Recycle and the scrap metal is taken away by Green Planet.
