VIDEO: Argument Preceded Fatal Shoreline Shooting of Man, Still Unknown Who Pulled Trigger

A man and woman are in custody in the shooting death of a man they knew

A man and woman are in custody of the King County Sheriff's Office after an argument turned deadly in the yard of a home at 145th St. and Densmore Ave. N. before noon on Thursday.

It's unknown who pulled the trigger and shot a man in his 40s. The King County Medical Examiner 's office is on the scene. King County Sheriff's Major Crimes detectives are investigating. All parties involved in the argument and shooting apparently knew each other, King County Sheriff Steve Strachan said.

Shoreline Police received a call at 11:54 a.m. about a disturbance and the shooting occurred while officers were en route to the scene, Strachan said.

A woman who lives down the street on Densmore Ave. N. said she heard arguing before the gunshots.

"I heard fighting and then I heard 'pop, pop, pop," she said.

She added that she had witnessed what she considered suspicious activity around the home.

The police have shut down 145th St. from Wallingford Ave. N. to Ashworth Ave. and traffic is being diverted.

The City says safety is not a growing concern. Last Monday, the City Manager's Office presented the results of this year’s citizens survey to the City Council. On public safety, Deputy Mayor Chris Eggen noted, "This has been a bad last two years for major crimes; we've had a couple of homicides, a couple of rapes. I don't believe there is anything that we could have done. They were sort of isolated incidents, not indicative of any gang activity or trend or anything. But still, you certainly don't like to see that happen in your city, and I am sure that is another thing our police department is trying to look at and figure out how to do something significant about." A consultant for the City responded, "If you look at the chart that is right in front of you now, probably the best chart to look at first is that overall feeling of safety, because the overall feeling of safety as you can look at really hasn't changed since 2004 at all, because remember, the overall margin of error is +/- 3%. So when you start in 2004 at 79% and then you are at 78% now, it hasn't changed at all." The City does the survey every 2 years. They used to show the trend over 2 year intervals; now it is 4 years. In other words, they left out 2006 and 2010. The 2010 survey, which was presented to Council on October 4, 2010, revealed "the overall feeling of safety in Shoreline" was 83%. This year it was 78%. That is a significant drop of 5 points. I would say safety is a growing concern.

As the homeowner for 15 years of the home of the adjoining driveway, this has been devastating. We have been concerned with this house at 1620 N. 145th, Shoreline for some time. The condition is almost unlivable. The owner (who lives in California) always blames the renter for the state of the house. I am hoping this is a wake up call for the city to more closely scrutinize rental properties. Our live will never be the same.

Thank you for your comment, Robert. See an update from today. The female suspect has been released pending more investigation, specifically the possibility of self-defense.

Im am absolutley SHOCKED....My good friend Donnie is dead because of this crazy Rachel and her boyfriend. Let everyone know now that this is not Tristians first murder investigation. This was NOT self defense but true cold blooded murder. I can not believe that these two have been released. Donnies family will be devistated over this news.

Shannon, who are you? Who is Tristan? I don't even know who Donnie is. I know I have 3 young sons who now are scared. My wife and I have owned our home for 15 years and never dealt with so much disruption as we have in the last 6 months, much less the last 36 hours.

Donnie is the victim..Rachel Patterson is the one who shot him and Tristian was her boyfriend who owned the gun. You and your family should be scared. These two people are not of sound mind. Drugs are a huge part of their life. Living next door to them you should have noticed odd behavior, odd hours and odd associations. Donnie briefly knew these two and didnt go over there to hurt anyone. He thought he could talk civil over a situation to two people who are very big hot heads. Tristian has previously been investigated over the murder of his previous room mate. He bragged about killing this x room mate and through his body in a dumpster. So somebody please tell me how anyone could believe that they can get away with this. They have violent records.

I am deeply sorry for the death of the man. I send my condolences to his family and friends. May justice prevail. God bless. On a different note, I want to know why Strachan made the announcement on air. Why didn't the Chief of Police, Shoreline (S. Ledford) make the announcement?

there seems to be no records of anything of tristan and esp rachel having a violent past i did see a long history of career crimanal activity on donald so i think everyone should wait and see what really happend before we pass judgment on anyone. its tragic what happend but in truth no one knows the details yet.

Hello Grant... I just got chills when I read your post... I am so very sorry for the loss of your friend.. Donnie was the first person who I met in Seattle, who I thought was a long lost friend from the past.. He had an old school about him that I adored. He became very good friends with my husband and tought him a lot. I never saw a mean bone in his body.. It was his rough "Bostonian" exterior that caught my attention and that drew me too him.. These two have a record and I have it posted. Two over the top, drug addicted, sociopathic murderers who will get what they deserve...you may contact me anytime.. And so can who ever else needs me to clarify who the two people were who killed our friend. phxbulldog1@hotmail.com

Johnny Fischer... who are you and what do you know???? NOTHING... let me fill you in... http://seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2008824230_slaying07m.htmlI Read for yourself... Tristan Smith was convicted of a previous involvment of a murder. Being someone who knew ALL of the people invovled I can assure you that evan though Donnie had a "past".. it was nothing of a violent past.. Petty crimes are not the same as violent crimes....

You are a slanderous piece of shit. Get you facts straight, or go see your therapist! You never knew me, or the other lady living in the house. MY HOUSE UNLIVABLE?! and your yard full of junk was fucking beautiful! Thank You by the way for hiding in your house, when Donnie tried to murder me, and I was yelling for help. You are a coward and a loser. Find a better way to fill your time and keep my name out of your mouth.--Rachel (the VICTIM)
