Smith on Politics: We’ll Use Old Precincts for Precinct Caucuses

Republican caucuses set for March 3

When Republicans hold precinct caucuses March 3 and Democrats have their caucuses April 15, voters won’t caucus with the precincts that they’ll vote in for the August primary and November general election.

They’ll caucus with old precincts to send delegates to legislative district caucuses for the new districts that resulted from redistricting.

Although the new legislative and congressional districts were set Jan. 1, new precincts may not be set until May.

King County will reorganize precincts based on those new legislative-district boundaries.

For example, precincts in Lake Forest Park have long had designations like ”LFP-32-10, but they’ll now have names like “LFP 46-10.”In Seattle, many precincts will be split into two and others will be combined.

Republican caucuses set for March 3

King County Republicans will hold “pooled” precinct caucuses to lessen confusion over locations.

The King County Republican Party announced Jan. 20 that it would hold precinct caucuses at 10 a.m. March 3.

The 32nd Legislative GOP caucuses for Shoreline and Lake Forest Park will be held at Aurora Church of the Nazarene 1900 N. 175th St.

The caucuses will be “pooled” in central locations in legislative districts to try to lessen confusion over locations, according to a statement from the party.

The Party has yet to announce sites for caucuses in Shoreline or Lake Forest Park.

County Republican Party Chair Lori Sotelo said last week that the nominating process had inspired a lot of passion and that the contest for the Republican Party nomination will likely be undecided when Washington Republicans hold their caucuses. Sotelo said she believed the contest among the remaining candidates — Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich — would draw a high attendance.

"This is a really good conversation in the Republican Party between candidates with very different points of view, and talking about them now will be very good for our party," Sotelo said.

No February elections here

Feb. 14 will be Election Day in the Edmonds, Auburn. Federal Way, Renton and Tukwila school districts and in other jurisdictions around the State, but there will be no elections in Shoreline or Lake Forest Park.
