Shorewood Baseball and Softball Fields at Meridian Park to Open Today

Some neighbors consider the fields a nuisance, but it's play ball for Shorewood athletes with assistance from a 2006 bond passed by voters

A ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of the new Shorewood High School baseball and softball fields will take place at 4 p.m. Meridian Park, today, Tuesday, March 13.

The Shorewood baseball and softball teams will be playing varsity and junior varsity games on the new fields for the first time this afternoon and evening, weather-permitting. The old fields at the high school were uprooted to make way for a parking lot and the construction of the new Shorewood High School.

The fields are located behind Meridian Park School. The entrance is at North 170th Street and Wallingford Avenue North. Parking is available on site or at Meridian Park School or the Shoreline Children’s Center.

The playing surfaces are FieldTurf and are lighted for evening use. The complex was designed by D.A. Hogan & Associates and the contractor is Terra Dynamics.

Some neighbors have complained about the fields being an eyesore and creating too much noise and traffic and other problems. The fields are lighted for night use, which has been another major point of controversy. E-mails have been flying back-and-forth for months between some homeowners near the school, city planning staff and the school district.

Meanwhile, the district is thanking the community for its support. The fields were paid for from funds from the 2006 bond issue.
