Salomon Clinches Shoreline Council Seat as Final Results Posted

Salomon credits volunteers for late push to victory, looks forward to serving on Council

Jesse Salomon will be the newest member of the Shoreline City Council after defeating Robin McClelland by 119 votes for the Position 6 seat held by Terry Scott.

The public defender trailed by several hundred votes on election night but cut into McClelland's lead eventually overtaking her and building up enough of an advantage to avoid a recount.

"It's been a long-drawn out count and finally happy to see it ended," he said after final offical results posted today on the King County Elections Web site. "I'm happy with the results of course. I think they should count votes faster next time."

Salomon gave credit to his campaign volunteers, whose late push the polls put him over the top.

"We worked really hard," he said. "We had a lot of volunteers who put in a lot of time in the get out the vote campaign. I think they were a huge help in delivering those late votes. We worked hard to contact voters at the door."

"Councilmember Terry Scott's edorsement was important and we were able to send out a mailing that he did endorse me," Salomon added.

McClelland issued the following statement today:

"The election results have been certified, and it is clear that my opponent has prevailed in this very close race.

I remain grateful to my dedicated hard-working team, the hundreds of Shoreline people who helped finance my campaign, and the thousands of voters who believed I have the best qualifications for serving on our city council.

I am particularly proud that my team kept the promise requested by my opponent to run a clean campaign.  At no time did we resort to smear tactics or distort his positions.

I will continue to lend my expertise, knowledge, and time to the compelling issues we face as we work to keep Shoreline the best place to live. "

The race was the most expensive in the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park area this campaign season, with Salomon spending over $30,000, including more than $10,000 of his own money, and McClelland spending over $19,000.

"In a local race money is important but voter contact is more important than money," Salomon said. "The money came in once people came to see how hard we were working on contacting poeple in Shoreline. In that sense, I think it was a pretty grass roots effort."

Salomon said now that he's been elected he plans on working to make sure Shoreline has a capital budget with good allocatiions toward sidewalks and street lighting, to support Town Center development that values existing businesses, and continue to support the majority of Richmond Beach residents who oppose the Point Wells project and as well as support the Shoreline Senior Center.

"I will be able to influence the agenda to some extent to fulfill my priorities that I"ve talked about, while working collaboratively with the rest of the Council," Salomon said.

In the two other races, incumbents Chris Eggen and Doris McConnell were reelected in clear majorities over William Hubbell and Janet Way respectively.
