Poll: Darcy Burner Calls on Women Who Have Had Abortions to 'Come Out'

The local Congressional candidate made an unusual rallying cry at a meeting of political bloggers in Rhode Island last weekend.

, an Ames Lake resident running for Jay Inslee's Congressional seat in Washington's old and newly drawn 1st District, made an interesting request of her audience during a speech at a progressive bloggers convention in Rhode Island over the weekend.

As the SeattlePI.com reported Tuesday, the Democratic candidate gave a speech in which she invited all the women in the audience who had had an abortion to stand up and "come out about it." Comparing the stigma against abortion to the changing public perception of homosexuality, Burner then encouraged those gathered at the Netroots Nation event to rise if they were willing to "stand with every woman who is willing to come out about having had an abortion."

"This is how we change the stories in people's heads," Burner said to applause from the audience. "We need to make it OK for women to come out about the choices we make."

A YouTube video of Burner's entire speech is available by clicking here or watching the attached clip. The abortion comments come shortly after the 10-minute mark.

What do you think? Was it encouraging or off-putting for Burner to try to de-stigmatize abortion in this manner?
