Highland Terrace Teacher Hit By SUV While On Bicycle Is Out Of ICU

Third-grade teacher Lynn Holmes was seriously injured May 13 but is expected to survive

Highland Terrace third-grade teacher Lynn Holmes was seriously injured in a car-bicycle accident in Lake Forest Park, at 8 p.m. May 13, Mother's Day.

Holmes was in the intensive care unit at Harborview but will transfer out today. She is now in satisfactory condition.

Holmes was riding her bicycle on 37th Ave. N.E. near N.E. 170th Place when she was struck by a Chevy Suburban.

She was wearing a helmet.

The investigation is ongoing, said Sgt. Jason Becker of the LFP Police Department, but drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the accident. It's unlikely that criminal charges will be filed, he said.

As a cyclist, I'd like to know the details of what happened when they are determined. I've been riding a bike off and on for years. I only had one semi near miss - not including the ones where I was defensive/alert enough to avoid drivers who saw me but chose to not obey basic right of way rules. I find in these types of accidents, either the cyclist is hard to see due to not being clothed brightly enough OR the driver is not following right of way rules or not paying attention to the road.
