GALLERY: Shoreline Celebrates Veterans Day

City honors Veterans in third annual cermony

An overflowing crowd packed Shoreline City Hall Chambers for the third annual Shoreline Veterans Day celebration, Monday, Nov. 12. 

Following a color guard entry by the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance, Lieutenant Colonel Kenneth Alford gave an invocation.

Mayor Keith McGlashan welcomed the approximately 200 people attending before speeches on Veterans Day by Shorewood students Malik Drammeh and Hazel Navarro.

Long-time Shoreline resident and Army and Navy officer Ray Coffey introduced the key note speaker, Army surgeon Dr. Benjamin Starnes of Seattle.

Shoreline resident Dwight Stevens, chairman of the Shoreline Veterans Day committee, and an Air Force veteran from World War II introduced three veterans who live in Shoreline who were singled out for special recognition: Manfred Wolfensteine who served in the Army during World War II including landing in Normandy on D-Day; Sonny Alvarez, who served in the Army in Vietnam and later in the National Guard and State Guard; and finally Coffey who served in both the Army and Navy, including stints in Vietnam, Desert Storm and Desert Shield.
