Following McDermott was Republican Ron Bemis, who received, 13,076, or 16 percent of the vote.

McDermott is up 56 percent to 26 percent over Bemis in Snohomish County and 71 percent to 15 percent over Bemis in King County.

The top two finishers will go head-to-head in the Nov. 6 general election. The winner will represent Edmonds and Woodway. As a result of redistricting, both are part of the influential 7th Congressional District.

The 7th Congressional District also includes nearby unincorporated areas of southwest Snohomish County, a small portion of Lynnwood, all of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, most of Seattle and some of Seattle’s southwest suburbs.

McDermott, 75, has served 12 terms in Congress. He is a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which writes tax legislation and bills affecting Social Security, Medicare and other entitlement programs.

State results will be certified on Aug. 24.

Shoreline and most of Lake Forest Park were formerly part of the 1st Congressional District represented by Democratic Congressman Jay Inslee, who is now running for governor against former state Attorney General Rob McKenna.

Shoreline and Lake Forest Park voters will be in 7th Congressional District beginning Jan. 1, but still voted for 1st District candidates to represent them through end of year. The two leading vote-getters in that race are Snohomish County republican John Koster with 34.78 percent of the vote and Eastside democrat Suzan DelBene with 25.07 percent of the vote. The pair will face off in November for the one-month term as well as redrawn 1st District's regular two-year term. Shoreline and Lake Forest Park will only be represented by DelBene or Koster for December 2012.
