Shoreline Crime: City Advises Residents on How to Prevent Burglaries, Prowls

The crime rate remains low, the city of Shoreline says, but notes the three most frequent crimes are residential burglaries, car prowls and mail theft. It is offering advice on how to prevent all three.

The crime rate remains low in Shoreline, but the city is advising residents what they can do about its three most frequent crimes: burglaries, car prowls and mail theft.

Burglaries, for example, are often preventable. The city noted in a public advisory posted on its website earlier this week that 30 to 50 percent of burglaries in Shoreline are at homes where burglars enter homes via unlocked doors or windows.

Car prowls, the advisory notes, are often of vehicles left unlocked, or vehicle in which valuables are left in plain sight. Mail theft by thieves targeting checks and identification can often be prevented by the use of locking, clustered mailboxes, and the city advises residents to pick up their mail every day.
