Seafair BUI Patrols Net 34 Arrests

An additional 15 people were fined $2,050 for refusing a breath test.

Extra BUI patrols over Seafair weekend resulted in 34 arrests, law enforcement officials said Monday morning.

A total of 473 vessels were contacted on Lake Washington during the emphasis period, which began Friday and ended Sunday after the hydroplane races.

Along with the 34 people who were arrested on suspicion of boating under the influence, an additional 15 were fined $2,050 for refusing a breath test. One person was arrested for allegedly possessing a stolen firearm, and two handguns were seized.

The preliminary numbers are lower than what was reported over the same weekend in 2012, when 693 vessels were contacted and 61 people were arrested for BUI.

series of new state BUI laws went into effect on July 28. The crime is now a gross misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $5,000 fine and/or 364 days in jail.
