UPDATE: Protest as Well as Candlelight Vigil Planned by Family and Friends of Man Killed by Shoreline Police

Friend says his suicidal friend David Albrecht was only a threat to himself; vigil planned for Golden Gardens Park in Seattle on Tuesday night

The friends and family of David Albrecht, the suicidal man shot and killed by Shoreline Police on his 22nd birthday on Wednesday, are planning to protest in front of the department in the next few days.

"We're all still reeling from this," said Joel James, a friend of Albrecht's, who is serving as spokesman for Albrecht's friends and family.

James said Albrecht's father contacted police to ask for help in dealing with his suicidal son, but never expected him to be shot.

"What we believe happened was escalating violence," James said. "He maybe snapped but he wasn't trying to hurt anybody but himself. I don't believe this was handled correctly."

James said T-shirts were being made and about 20-30 people planned to march in the protest. The Albrecht family is also talking to several attorneys, James said, but no one has taken their case yet.

Albrecht's family and friends are also going to have a candlelight vigil for him on Tuesday, Aug. 16 from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at Golden Gardens in Seattle. They have asked on the Facebook invite for the vigil for attendees to be sober when they show up.

The King County Sheriff's Office that said when Albrecht came out of the house in the 700 block of N. 200th he had a knife and a shotgun. He was told several times to drop the shotgun by two Shoreline officers and when he didn't they both fired their guns and he was hit at least twice.

The Sheriff's statement said Albrecht's girlfriend, James' sister, told police when they arrived that there was a loaded rifle in a downstairs bedroom.

James said he wasn't aware of any ammunition in the house. The shotgun was given to Albrecht as a gift and wasn't intended to be used.

"It was more of a sentimental thing rather than a thing to use," James said.

Albrecht also was listed in the state computer system as a "safety risk" to officers because of a 2010 incident in Snohomish County where he assaulted officers, according to the Sheriff's Office. He was also convicted of a felony, Assault 3rd degree and had a court order prohibiting contact with his girlfriend.

An autopsy on Albrecht by the King County Medical Examiner's Office is pending.

A memorial service is also being planned for Albrecht, who attended Shorewood High School, James said.

The two Shoreline officers involved in the shooting, are 29 and 34 years old and have been police officers for six years and 11 years respectively. They are both on paid administrative leave. Their names have not yet been released.

The last time Shoreline Police fatally shot someone was Sept. 10, 2009, when three officers shot and killed one of two bank robbers in the rear lot of after he pulled what looked a like a black semiautomatic handgun. It turned out later to be a fake gun, an Airsoft Model G26C, a replica of a G-26 Glock pistol used by police. The two men had robbed the inside Safeway on Aurora Ave. N.
