UPDATE: Car Smashes Into Jo-Ann Fabrics, Elderly Passenger Dies

The driver apparently mistook the gas pedal for the brake and slammed into the building

A front-seat passenger died Tuesday, when the driver of a four-door Honda Civic apparently lost control and hit the front of the building about 1:45 p.m., according to Shoreline Fire Department spokeswoman Melanie Granfors.

Three elderly females were in the car at the time of the accident which occurred in the Jo-Ann Fabric parking lot at 155th St. and Aurora Ave. N. The driver and a backseat passenger were transported to Harborview Trauma Center with life threatening injuries.  They were orginally in critical condition but have been upgraded to serious condition in the intenstive-care unit at Harborview and are expected to survive.

King County Sheriff's Office traffic investigators are looking into exactly what happened.  They told fire officials it appears to be a case of the driver mistaking the gas pedal for the brake.
