Dreams

Day one 2012 DNC.

The official start of the 2012 Democratic National Convention is today. The gavel goes down at 5pm EST. Many of you will be still be at work as we begin the process to make Barack Obama President of the United States for four more years.

Even though we haven't convened the convention, many of my dreams are already coming true. I went to the DNC in 2004 and missed out on doing one thing, watching a live taping of MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews. I did that yesterday

I met in person Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Shultz and she did something very special (which I will share later). I partied all night with Roots and Will.I.Am and then talked my way into the VIP after party with my friends. I sang Al Green's Lets Stay Together live in front of delegations from AZ, CO, OR and WA.

In short, I could leave now and still be floating on a cloud of dreams that have come true.

Having said that, the best thing that I have seen here so far is the true diversity of the participants. I sat in on the Ethnic caucus and listened in as we welcomed, for the first time, Turkish members. I was able to greet them with my limit Turkish language skills.

I want you all to keep in mind that when you see the diversity of the Democratic party, it is real. We are real people who are here because we believe in what we do and are welcomed by a party that says that compassion for each other is a higher level of existence than monetary gain. The people here are not bussed in to make it look diverse and, though we are proud, we do not put our diversity above our common humanity. We are the dream of the great melting pot come true.

And speaking of dreams, one of the speakers at the Jewish caucus shared with us a quote from a Latina mother in the southwest. When talking about the children that will be made whole citizens by the DreamAct she said, "When President Obama sees our children, he calls them the Dream, when the GOP sees them, they call them illegals."

Can we all make our dreams come true? I say YES WE CAN!
