Before Easter, Thousands of Eggs Delivered to Shoreline's Food Lifeline

Easter and Spring time brings to mind a fun time for families. However, record numbers of families in Western Washington and throughout the nation are still facing tough times in the uncertain economy. Many are currently relying on food assistance, with one in eight Americans expected to receive help from local food banks in 2012.

Nest Best Egg Company of Portland, Ore. kicked off its donation of fresh eggs by delivering more than 64,800 eggs to Food Lifeline, Washington’s largest hunger relief organization and local Feeding America member, on March 28.  Throughout the next year, eggs will be donated bi-monthly to help families struggling with food insecurity. The donation is part of a national effort, organized by the United Egg Producers and Feeding America.  For the fifth consecutive spring, America’s egg farmers are giving the Easter Bunny and families in need, a helping hand by donating these nutritious, fresh eggs, bringing the total number of eggs farmers have contributed to 60 million since 2008 .

“Nest Best Egg Company is proud to be partnering with Food Lifeline to provide much needed protein to the most needy in our community, especially during the Easter holiday season,” said Kathleen Sparks of Nest Best Egg Company.

Last year, Food Lifeline distributed more than 35 million pounds of food – the equivalent of more than 27 million meals – to feed hungry people throughout Western Washington. This donation of eggs is a much-needed item for the people in visiting local food banks because of their high-quality protein content and nutritional benefits.

“We have a network of 300 hot meal programs, food pantries, churches,” said Ashley Gammell, corporate relations manager for Food Lifeline. “Whenever we bring in large amounts of product we make it available to network as whole. Our amazing agencies log in and can see what’s in the inventory and see what’s helpful for them.”

The eggs donated are expected to be in high demand.

“It’s really going to be whoever wants them I’m sure they’re going to go very fast,” Gammell said. “We could handle a donation like this every week and be clamoring for eggs. They’re so nutritious and in demand by our agencies. “
