Gas Prices Up Nearly 37 Cents a Gallon in Last Month

Crisis in Libya contributing to jump at pump

Gas prices in the Seattle-Bellevue-Everett area continue to climb, jumping 37 cents in the last month, according to the latest figures from AAA released this morning.

It's likely that gas prices this summer will hit $4 a gallon or higher for regular unleaded, similar to what happened in 2008, said AAA spokeswoman Jennifer Cook.

Crude oil prices continue to go up because of events in Libya, the third-largest oil producer in Africa.

"The continued unrest will put pressure on crude oil prices; it’s likely we’ll see a continuation of this trend," Cook said. "It won’t be a surprise if gas prices in 2011 hit 2008 prices."

The current average price for regular unleaded locally is $3.72.
