Tips, Tricks and Secrets to Saving Your Family Money

The holidays can be a stressful and expensive time for families, but they can also be a joyful time if we remember to slow down and really enjoy each other.  While there are lots of parties to attend and recitals to enjoy, I wanted to share a few inexpensive local holiday activities that are family focused and will help get you in the spirit of the holidays.

  • Get the gang in the car and go see some of the best free light displays in Seattle.  One of these is said to be on Candy Cane Lane in Ravenna (December 15 to New Year's). It is located at NE Park Road, off Ravenna Boulevard.  Another good one is located in Olympic Manor neighborhood near Greenwood (NW 85th Street and 23rd Avenue NW).
  • Attend the Christmas Ship Festival at Salt Water Park at 2021 NW 190th Street.  On December 13, 2011, at 7:30 p.m., join the Shoreline community for a bonfire and carols. Singing is provided by Syre Elementary and Einstein Middle Schools choirs as well as The Everett Chorale.  At 8:20 p.m. the Christmas Ship, several Argosy vessels, and other small boats decked out with holiday lights, will arrive off Richmond Beach Saltwater Park for a 20 minute performance.
  • Bring the family to North City’s Tree Lighting Ceremony at North City Les Schwab Tire Center at 15th Ave NE & NE 180th St on December 3rd at 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Listen to some fun holiday music and grab a candy cane from Santa.  Donated non-perishable food items are also being accepted by Hopelink.
  • Go to Mill Creek Town Center for holiday fun including a parade on Saturday, December 3rd from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.  There will be holiday karaoke, a parade down Main Street, a tree lighting ceremony at City Hall and other festivities throughout the Town Center, including Santa pictures, live music, cookie decorating, face painting and more. See www.millcreektowncenter.biz/special_events.php for more information.
  • Watch Lake Forest Park Town Center's own ballet company dance the steps of the season at their holiday recital. The recital starts at 1:00 p.m. on December 10th at 17171 Bothell Way NE. This should be a great event for those who appreciate truly great dancing. http://www.thirdplacebooks.com/event/northwest-ballet-holiday-recital-3
