Try learning some new moves this winter

1. The Shoreline City Council will meet tonight at 7 p.m. in City Hall. Among the agenda items, the council will discuss updates to the city’s comprehensive plan.

Perhaps one of the best ways to keep the endorphins moving and meet some new faces is to do some dancing.

Research suggests that dancing is more than just good exercise. Learning dance moves can also help boost cognitive ability, including improving memory and attention.

3. The heat is on: 2010 ties 2005 for hottest year on record.

Results are in, and the planet was just as warm last year as 2005, the warmest year on record with an average global surface temperature of 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th century average.

Nine of the last 10 years have ranked in the list of 10 warmest years since recording began in the late 1800s.

4. Meet with your neighborhood association.

Shoreline-Lake Forest Park neighborhood associations are an active influence in the area. They help build relationships between community members and promote neighborhood voices in the legislative process.

The Highland Terrace Neighborhood Association and Block Watcher will meet tonight at the Highland Terrace Elementary School Library from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The Echo Lake Neighborhood Association will meet tonight at Shoreline City Hall room 301 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

5. New "death tax" foments anger in King County.

This month, The King County Medical Examiner began charging $50 for every reported death to help pay for the costs of dealing with an estimated 13,0o0 deaths each year. Reporting is required before burials.

The Evergreen Freedom Foundation reports that a family was outraged to find a $50 charge at the bottom of a hospital bill when they lost their daughter an hour after she was born at the University of Washington Medical Center.
