5 Things You Need To Know Today: December 25

Don't believe the hype: there is plenty to do on Christmas Day

Now that the wrapping paper is balled up in the corner of the living room with care and the figgy pudding and the eggnog have finally learned to play nice in your belly, what do you do with the rest of your day?

Not everyone celebrates Christmas, but most places shut down on the 25th. Fortunately, we put together a handy Christmas Day guide to help you through this holiday in the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park area.

1. Where to get the essentials

Forget the marshmallows for the yams? Drain that eggnog earlier than expected? Need another bottle of sparkling wine for those mimosas? Fret not, for grocery shopping is plentiful today.

2. Go Ice skating

Dust off those old ice skates and head down to Highland Ice Arena for a public skate session from noon 4 p.m. Skate rentals are $3 per pair, and admission is $7 for adults and teens, $6 for children and seniors.

3. Catch a movie

Landmark Crest Cinema in Shoreline is open today. Shows are only $3 and titles include Secretariat, Never Let Me Go, Red and Hereafter.

Regal Cinemas in Northgate is also open and showing several new releases, including True Grit, TRON: Legacy, The Fighter and Black Swan.

4. Hit the slots

Goldie's Casino never closes, and Christmas Day is no exception. Give them a call at (206) 440-8754 for details on food and games.

5. Get some Chinese food

A growing custom for people who don't celebrate Christmas or don't have time to make a big holiday feast is to eat Chinese food. Traditionally, the Chinese don't celebrate Christmas, so many Chinese restaurants remain open on Christmas Day, including Nara Chinese Restaurant in Shoreline, which will be open from noon to 2 a.m.

You can also head down to the International District in Seattle, where eating Chinese is becoming a holiday tradition all its own.
