Bites Nearby: Central Market

An unsuspecting meal

Grocery stores are one of the most unsuspecting spots to find a meal. Over the years store owners have offered up rotisserie chicken, fast-food Chinese, corn dogs, fried chicken and sandwiches plus an array of deli salads.

In Shoreline we are lucky to have Central Market, a store that has taken run-of-the-mill deli offering decidedly up a notch with variety and selection, not to mention quality.

Sure they have sandwiches, but there are 70 meat and cheese selections to choose from…and it is sliced to order. The ready-made sandwiches have uncharacteristic yet delicious combinations. Jambon and brie, steak and blue cheese are just a couple.

Sure they have the classic pizza offerings, but they also offer ready-to-stretch dough, pizza sauce and all the toppings necessary for a fun evening of signature pizza making.

Sure they have hot food, and it follows along the classic lines of baked chick, mac & cheese and corn dogs. They then have a few surprises – like classic Indian dishes.

Then Central Market goes in a totally distinctive direction.

An Asian Noodle bar dishes up hot broth (chicken or vegetarian) swimming with fresh vegetables and shrimp, chicken or tofu.

A heat-and-eat section is chock full of entrees and side dishes in an array able to please even picky eaters. Kung Pao Chicken, Beef Stroganoff, Tikka Masala, meatloaf, grilled vegetables, friend rice, mashed potatoes can be mixed and matched to build a quick meal. Select any entrée and add two sides for an additional $3.

Self serve food bars are another alternative. Yes, there is the classic salad bar … but with dozens of fresh choices. Yes, there are the traditional prepared salads. There are hot soups, nine of them. Then there are vegetarian dishes and the fixins for falafel, gyro or just a good Mediterranean sampler plate with babaganoush, hummas, tzatziki and feta (they have French and Greek). Fresh mozzarella, in a few different sizes; and an antipasto bar, full of marinated vegetables and at least a dozen different types of olives, round out the other than average offerings.

Should you wish to grab a bite before shopping, or simply want to avoid dirtying up your kitchen, make use of the fully equipped eating area within the deli side of the store. To speed you through paying, Central Market offers a cash stand within the deli so that you don’t have to stand in line behind the customer doing their monthly grocery shopping.
