Viewfinder: Richmond Beach Sand Castle Contest

Families converged under the sun to participate in the annual Sand Castle Contest on Sunday afternoon.

Richmond Beach Saltwater Park was a bustling venue on Sunday, Aug. 21, as locals gathered to build sand castles or curiously spectate. There were about 25 officially registered participants, though many more took pleasure in building smaller castles on the sidelines.

The Sand Castle Contest was also the home to live steel drum music performed by the Islanders Steel Drum Band and free back massages, compliments of Northwest Family Chiropractic & Massage.

After three hours of labor-intensive work under the warm summer sun, spectators were awed at the resulting castles. Sand cats, turtles, whales, standard castles, and a giant sea shell lined the beach, along with the grand prize winner: an elaborately detailed sand dragon built by Team Owen. In second and third place, respectively, were Team Hamilton with the “Family castle” and Team Sandy Sand with the “Sand troll.”
