Traffic Alert: Repaving Along I-5 from Lynnwood to Shoreline Begins Monday

SHORELINE –Nearly everything wears down over time, and it’s no different with the pavement on Interstate 5. But help is coming to South Snohomish County.

On Monday, May 20, crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will kick off a project to repave a stretch of southbound I-5 from 52nd Avenue West in Lynnwood to State Route 104 in Shoreline. Crews will also repave on- and off-ramps at State Route 104, 236th Street and 220th Street Southwest as part of the project.

“The pavement on this section of I-5 is wearing down,” WSDOT project engineer Mark Sawyer said. “We’re seeing ruts and other signs of deterioration and we need to make improvements for driver safety.”

Crews will first replace sidewalk sections and curbs at the SR 104, 236th Street and 220th Street ramps before starting the paving work later this summer. Once paving begins, drivers can expect multiple, overnight lane and ramp closures in both directions of I-5 Monday through Thursday. Detour routes will guide drivers during the ramp closures.

The $5.36 million project will extend the useful life of the pavement by about 20 years. Besides repaving, crews with Granite Construction will add reflective lane markings to improve visibility, particularly in adverse weather.

The new pavement will give drivers a smoother, safer commute into Seattle. Work should be complete this fall.
