Shoreline Bans Roosters, Big Pigs as Pets Effective Oct. 29

No more crowing in Shoreline after Oct. 29, as new city regulations ban roosters, among a selection of other animals, comes into effect.

Roosters, along with peacocks, mink, nutria, foxes, and swine over 120 pounds and 20 inches tall are prohibited within city limits, according to the new regulations.

The regulations passed 6-1, with Councilman Jesse Salomon dissenting, on July 29 as part of changes to the city's development code.

Several residents came before the city council to persuade the city to continue to allow roosters within city limits. Salomon and Councilwoman Shari Winstead had supported excluding roosters from the newly banned animals, but the proposal did not gain a majority of council support. Chickens still are allowed within city limits.

The list of prohibited animals within Shoreline are:

• Roosters
• Peacocks and peahens
• Swine over 120 pounds and 20 inches tall
• Mink
• Nutria
• Foxes
• Venomous snakes
• Nonhuman primates and prosimians
• Bears
• Nondomesticated species of felines
• Nondomesticated species of canines and their hybrids, including wolf and coyote hybrids
• The order Crocodylia, including alligator, crocodiles, caimans and gavials

• Cats
• Dogs
• Small animals such as hamsters, gerbils, mice, reptiles, fish, etc. that are kept in aquariums, terrariums, cages, or similar containers 
• Rabbits and similarly sized animals
• Chickens (hens only)  
• Birds
• Bees (up to four hives)
• Small livestock such as sheep, goats, and swine under 120 pounds and under 20 inches tall
• Large livestock such as cattle or horses on two-acre lots.
