Community Garden Is Thriving in Shoreline’s Ballinger Neighborhood

Public is invited to Diggin' Shoreline's meeting Tuesday, which is behind the Ballinger Neighborhood Community Garden.

Are you a gardening advocate? Do you want to contribute to the Ballinger Neighborhood Community Garden?

If so, you might want to check out the next meeting of Shoreline’s Diggin' Shoreline (formerly the Community Gardening Group), to be held 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Shoreline City Hall, 17500 Midvale Ave N. Everyone interested in community gardening is welcome to join in.

The Ballinger Neighborhood Community Garden is modeled after the Seattle P-Patch program, the first program of its kind, now operating in communities nationwide. Organizers are working in conjunction with Diggin' Shoreline, a collaboration of more than two dozen local area community-minded gardeners and master gardeners.

The group is dedicated to establishing a comprehensive community gardening program in Shoreline, including P-patches, demonstration gardens to help both children and adults learn how healthy food is grown, and co-operative urban farming on private lands.

The Ballinger Neighborhood Community Garden, which opened last year, is located behind Aldercrest Learning Center.  To get there, take Ballinger Way to 25th Avenue NE, turn on NE 200th Street, and look for the Ballinger Neighborhood sandwich board.
