Celebrate Shoreline Ramps Up This Weekend

The city's 16th birthday celebration includes a skate competition, parade, and festival.

Cue the marching bands, the floats, the drill teams, the live music, and even the skateboards as festivities kick into full gear this weekend.

The city's 16th birthday celebration gets started on Friday afternoon, with the tenth annual youth and teen skate competition at the Connie King Skate Park at (15300 8th Ave NE). From noon to 5 p.m., the event will feature age and ability based contests, including time run and trick categories, along with raffle prizes and free food. Competitors must sign a liability waiver, which can be found on the City of Shoreline Web site (shorelinewa.gov). Skaters of all skill levels are invited to compete, and the competition is free to both spectators and competitors.

The entertainment continues Saturday at noon, with the . Running south on 15th Ave NE between 185th and 165th NE, this year's parade is led by grand marshal Rich Gustafson, former Shoreline School District educator, vice principal, and athletic director, and 10-year Shoreline City Council member. The parade will feature the likes of local marching bands, drill teams, community groups, decorative floats, and more.

Everything wraps up at Ridgecrest Elementary (16516 10th Ave NE), the site of the and .

"Over 80 booths will be filled by community organizations, businesses, city resources, and new this year, a marketplace with a handful of vendors selling arts and crafts, tupperware, Usborne Books, and memberships to organizations," said Pam Barrett, Special Events Coordinator for Shoreline Parks and Recreation.

Stop by the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Patch booth and meet editor Tony Dondero and associate regional editor Margaret Santjer and pick up Patch swag, including pens, magnets, water bottles and coloring pages for the kids.

There will also be several attractions set up just for the kids, including inflatables (for a small fee) and free face painting.

Six food vendors will offer everything from hot dogs and nachos to roasted corn and gyros, and free live music will be provided throughout the day by pop-funk-jazz hybrid Hook Me Up, folk-rock group The Daily Flash, and ragtime group the Uptown Lowdown Jazz Band. The festival wraps up at 5 p.m.
