Holy Week and Easter at Church of the Redeemer, Kenmore, Washington

Come, attend worship services at Church of the Redeemer, Kenmore, Washington, this Holy Week and Easter.

The worship services of Holy Week and Easter day take us from sorrow to joy, from death to life. Come, participate with the people of Church of the Redeemer, 6211 182nd Street, Kenmore, Washington, as we revisit salvation history.

Palm Sunday, April 13, 10:00 am. Worship on the Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday, begins with a procession to recall Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem to begin the “mighty acts of salvation,” often called his Exodus (recalling the salvation journey of the Old Testament). The core of today's worship is the dramatic reading of the account of Our Lord’s passion and death from one of the Gospels. This sets the stage for the events that we commemorate during the rest of Holy Week.

Maundy Thursday, April 17, 7:30 pm. The word “Maundy” in this day’s title comes from the Latin word “mandatum,” which means “commandment”. It is taken from the account from the Gospel according to John of Jesus’ washing of the disciples’ feet at the Last Supper. Before receiving Holy Communion, we participate in foot washing, an act of love by Jesus to his disciples, as well as a reminder of the type of service Christians are called to exercise toward the World and one another.

Good Friday, April 18, 7:30 pm. The liturgy begins with prayer, biblical readings, including the Passion of Our Lord according to John, and a sermon. Then, a 2nd century form of the Prayers of the People called the “Solemn Collects” is prayed. Next, we participate in devotions which extol Christ’s victory on the Cross. Following these devotions, the figure of the Crucified Lord is taken down from the Cross and carried in solemn procession to a place of resting.

The Great Vigil of Easter, April 19, 9:00 pm. This is the central festival of the Church year. It consists of four parts. The Liturgy of Light kindles and blesses the new fire with the lighting the Pascal Candle. The Liturgy of Salvation History is six readings tracing Salvation History in the Hebrew Scriptures. The latest chapter in salvation history is written as we renew our Baptismal Covenant and commitment. Finally, the most glorious celebration of Holy Communion begins with the joyful announcement of “Alleluia! Christ is Risen!”

The Day of the Resurrection, Easter Day, April 20, 11:00 am. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us; therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia! Come to a festival celebration of the Holy Eucharist on Pascha, the Feast of the Resurrection, or Easter Day. This worship service has special, joyful music to mark the day. So also consider yourselves dead to sin, and alive to God in Jesus Christ our Lord. Alleluia!
