Bring event flyer or show proof of residency
The city of Shoreline's free Recycle Fest event will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 19 at the Shoreline Park & Ride Aurora Ave N at 192nd. At Recycle Fest, you can recycle many items that aren't accepted in your recycle bin. Items such as Styrofoam, bicycles and concrete will be accepted, and a full list of items accepted will be mailed out to all residents closer to the event date. No garbage or yard waste accepted. Recycle Fest will be free for all Shoreline residents. Proof of residency will be required. Note that only pick-up trucks or smaller vehicles will be allowed to enter. Detectives have name of a suspect but are not releasing the person's name
Jealously appears to have played a role in an argument that preceded the shooting death of a 17-year-old Shorecrest senior and 18-year-old Shorewood senior early Wednesday, according to the King County Sheriff's Office. The identity of the suspect is known, the Sheriff's Office said, but the name of the person is not being released because of the ongoing investigation. The shooting was not random or part of a gang conflict, said operations captain Scott Strathy of the Shoreline Police Department. It occurred about 12:30 a.m. in the 300 block of Richmond Beach Road outside the Maplewood Court Apartments on the border of the Hillwood and Richmond Highlands neighborhoods. A Seattle couple pleaded guilty today to theft of government funds for defrauding state and federal benefit programs intended to provide a safety net for the poor and vulnerable, announced U.S. Attorney Jenny A. Durkan. The chiropractor, David Silverstein, 60, and his long time live-in partner, Lyudmila Shimonova, 53, will pay more than $261,000 in restitution plus an additional civil penalty of $216,441. In all they will pay two and a half times the total fraud they perpetuated on the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and will reimburse both the Social Security Administration and the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) for the fraudulent benefits they obtained. The Shorewood boys soccer team continued its postseason march with a 2-1 victory over Chief Sealth at Shoreline Stadium Wednesday night in a first round state 3A playoff game. The No. 1-ranked Thunderbirds improved to 20-0 and will play for a quarterfinal matchup against fifth-ranked Bainbridge Saturday at Shoreline Stadium. The Thunderbirds (20-0) will host fifth-ranked Bainbridge in the quarterfinals on at 12 p.m. Saturday, May 19 at Shoreline Stadium. Dr. Art Coday of Shoreline and state Sen. Michael Baumgartner of Spokane will debate this evening, Thursday, May 17, at: 6:30 p.m. at the Innis Arden Club House, 1430 NW 188th Shoreline, WA 98177. Both candidates are running in the state's nonpartisan blanket primary Aug. 7 along with incumbent democrat U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, who is running for her third six-year term. The system allows voters to vote for any candidate running in the race, regardless of party affiliation. The top two vote-getters in the primary election qualify for the general election in November 6.

Shorewood's No. 1 doubles team of Francesca O' Malley and Daniella Brengelmann earns second trip to state tournament
Shorewood's No. 1 doubles team of Francesca O' Malley and Daniella Brengelmann defeated the Mountlake Terrace team of Gillian Braden- Armstrong and Nicole Bouche for the 3A District 1 Doubles Championship. The win qualified O'Malley and Brengelmann for the 3A WIAA state tennis tournament for the second straight year. The match was very close with the T-Birds winning 4-6, 7-6 ( 10-8 ), 7-5. Braden- Armstrong and Bouche will play a loser out and winner to state match versus the winner from the consolation final. The WIAA state tennis tournament starts Friday morning May 25th and continues Saturday May 26th at Kamiakin High School and the Tri-City Court Club in Kennewick, Washington.

Today, the effort to build an arena to lure an NBA and possibly an NHL team to Seattle became official. Chris Hansen, the Seattle native and San Francisco hedge fund manager, along with Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn and King County Executive Dow Constantine, announced the parties had reached a memorandum of understanding regarding a new, $490 million arena in the city's SODO District. The MOU must be approved by both the King County Council and the Seattle City Council. Francesca O'Malley and Daniella Brengelmann win twice to advance
The Shorewood doubles team of Francesca O' Malley and Daniella Brengelmann won two matches in the 3A District 1 tournament to advance to the district doubles final Wednesday at noon at Glacier Peak High School. The T-birds' due defeated a team from Lynnwood in the first match of the District 1 tournament 6-2, 6-0 and then defeated the number one seeded team from the Northwest Conference from Mount Vernon 6-4, 6-3 to advance to Wednesday's final. They will meet the team from Mountlake Terrace that they lost to last week in the Wesco 3A doubles final. The winner advances to the WIAA state 3A tournament in Kennewick, Washington May 25th and 26th. The loser must play the winner of the consolation bracket with the winner of that match …
