The public investment to help finance the project and be repaid via arena revenue would be $200 million if both an NBA and NHL team relocates, or $120 million if only an NBA team relocates.
Today, the effort to build an arena to lure an NBA and possibly an NHL team to Seattle became official. Chris Hansen, the Seattle native and San Francisco hedge fund manager, along with Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn and King County Executive Dow Constantine, announced the parties had reached a memorandum of understanding regarding a new, $490 million arena in the city's SODO District. The MOU must be approved by both the King County Council and the Seattle City Council. The arena would be built mostly to convince the NBA to locate a professional basketball team back in Seattle, which lost its team four years ago when owner Clay Bennett moved the team to Oklahoma City. One of the agreement's most controversial components is the public financing…

Real estate trackers see improvement in sales, while in Seattle prices continue to dip, though more slowly.
Reports are rampant about the state of the housing market. Some statistics point to an accelerated improvement, if only by small steps. Some still list a decline in price, but slower than before. The new Trulia Price Monitor tracks housing prices using listing price instead of sales price for the largest metro areas. They believe that they can trace market movement better because sales price follows list price by about 2 months. According to their reports, Seattle’s list prices have decreased 9.1 percent over March of 2011 behind only Tacoma’s 11.9 percent decline. Other areas such as Miami and Phoenix have experienced a double digit increase. Having the large metro areas experiencing a comeback bodes well for Seattle also. Confidence in …

Is Mariners management the modern day-version of the Black Sox?
Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park will host a reading by author Jon Wells who penned SHIPWRECKED: A Peoples’ History of the Seattle Mariners at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 10. Kenmore-based publisher Epicenter Press, which publishes mostly books about Alaska, published the book. “Despite the heroic efforts of many great players, the Seattle Mariners haven’t been to the World Series because their owners’ relentless passion for the bottom line has repeatedly undercut chances for success on the field,” says Wells, publisher of the independent Mariners’ game-program The Grand Salami. “Prioritizing profits over pennants ‒ mix in top-level management’s breathtaking arrogance and baseball ignorance ‒ add in some bad breaks, and the result is an …
