Shoreline City Council Declares Support For Marriage Equality
The Shoreline City Council declared support for marriage equality in Washington State.
On Monday evening, the Shoreline City Council gathered at City Hall for a special council meeting.
Mayor McGlashan read a proclamation that officially declared February as Black History Month in Shoreline.
There to accept the proclamation were three Shorewood High School students, who were involved in putting together their school's Black History Month assembly.
The council also considered a resolution to declare the city council's support for marriage equality in Washington State, specifically calling on the legislature to pass Senate Bill 6239.
The resolution would also urge the United States Congress to pass the Respect for Marriage Act, which would repeal the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act.
Mayor McGlashan spoke about the resolution, which was brought forward at his insistance.
"This has nothing to do with my sexual orientation," McGlashan said, addressing the council. "No matter which orientation I am, I will support equality for all citizens."
"I feel this is a great way to support diversity and all of our citizens in Shoreline," McGlashan said, after referencing a study that showed an increase in same sex couples in Shoreline.
The resolution passed unanimously, with a 6-0 vote.

On Monday evening, February 6, 2012 the city and our elected officials participated in yet another dinner meeting that allows for decision-making to occur outside the public view. EACH of our ELECTED officials are accountable for their individual decision to participate in this process. I as a voter will remember who is representing my interests in the most ethical manner with each election going forward. It will be a shame that the citizens will again have to defend the city and city council when complaints are filed. Apparently, this is the process that our city has decided is ethical and appropriate.....the new Shoreline going forward....whole series of "secret" meetings out of the public view (Acquiring SPU). Politics at it's very best! And yes, I will be posting this anonymously...the same way I am entitled to vote in this country.

Mr. Wood,
I am a deeply religious person and for some elected officials like myself, supporting marriage equality is going against their religious beliefs and I respect that. In this day and age, most of us know individuals who are gay and in very committed relations. I do. I have gay relatives on both sides of my family, and as the Mayor said at one time, I wish for them the same joy of a committed partnership that I experienced for over 20 years. As an elected official on the Shoreline City Council, I joined all my fellow council members in supporting this resolution. The city council loves getting "good reviews" as citizens don't often take the time to let us know that we are doing a great job. Thank you so much for your comment!
