The Shoreline School Board last week unanimously approved a 25-cent increase in school lunch meals for the 2011-2012 school year.
This is the second straight time the district has raised lunch prices as expenses rise and school budgets decline.Β Food service costs are up thanks to high fuel costs and increased retirement costs to the district.
Starting Sept. 1, 2011, elementary school lunches will be $3, middle and high school lunches will be $3.25, and adult lunches and additional student meals will be $3.75 to $4.

Other districts are also raising school lunch prices, including Seattle Public Schools which is planning on a 50-cent increase while other are considering 25-cent increases.Β
The price increase in Shoreline will raise an estimated $71,000 more to help the district's lunch program break even and finance new equipment.

The district's new central kitchen where food is prepared, opened in February at Hamlin Park. The District is projected to serve about 4 percent more meals this year than 2009-2010 despite declining enrollment.Β
