Shoreline man charged with child prostitution; beware exploding bakeware

1. Shoreline man charged with instructing a 17-year-old girl to prostitute herself while he was in jail

Police arrested Anthony Terry, 30, in June for allegedly pimping a woman. He is also accused of instructing an underage girl to sell sex while he was in jail to raise bail money, which could land him a hefty prison sentence under new laws.

Police have charged him under new legislation that allows harsher punishments for pimps and people who pay for sex with minors. Selling sex with minors is now considered a Class A felony, lumped in with first-degree rape, assault and kidnapping.

Terry is being held at King County Jail on $500,000 bail. If convicted, he could spend seven to ten years in prison under the new law.

2. Consumer Reports confirms: glass bakeware can explode unexpectedly

Consumer Reports put rumors of exploding glass bakeware to the test, confirming that a newer type of glass used in certain baking pans can explode when exposed to rapidly changing heating conditions.

In America, Pyrex and Anchor Hocking now sell glassware made out of a substance called soda lime, which is more prone to cracking and breaking at high temperatures, according to Consumer Reports.

The companies used to make their glassware out of material called borosilicate, which Consumer Reports says is still in use in Europe and more resistant to rapid heat changes.

3. The Shoreline City Council will meet tonight at 7 p.m. in City Hall. According to the agenda, the council will host public comment and then meet in executive session for the remainder of the meeting. No public agenda items are listed this week.

4. Washington state issues cease and desist order to payday loan company Checkmania

The Washington State Department of Financial Institutions has ordered and injunction against Checkmania and its online sister company, Checkmate Express Corporation, for selling and illegal retail installment loan programs and offering loans above the legal state limit.

The Federal Trade Commission urges consumers to stick to loans from reputable sources such as credit unions and banks instead of payday loan companies.

Payday loans and cash advances can accrue a huge amount of interest and fees in a short time, making them difficult to pay back and expensive in the long run.
